Metabolic Syndrome and Metabolism Boosters

There’s a lot of buzz around metabolic syndrome and metabolism boosters, both as a remedy for metabolic syndrome and as a means of reaching your weight loss goals. But just what is metabolic syndrome? Is there a way to increase your metabolism?

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is the name given to a cluster of conditions that are often found together. These conditions include abnormal triglyceride and cholesterol levels, excess body fat (particularly around the waist), high blood sugar levels, and elevated blood pressure. Metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

You can have one or more of these conditions without having metabolic syndrome. However, even one of these conditions means that your risk of developing a serious disease is increased—the more of these conditions you have, the greater your risk.

How to increase metabolism

To tackle metabolic syndrome, significant lifestyle changes are usually recommended. Swap starchy foods like white rice, bread, and pasta for wholefood equivalents, and add more fruits, leafy greens, and lean protein to your diet.

Raising and lowering your body temperature is another way to improve your metabolism. Cold-water swimming in combination with a sauna or a steam-room can achieve this. You can also try alternating hot and cold showers, or a hot bath followed by a cold shower.

Another way you can help support a faster metabolism is to take a metabolism-boosting supplement. There are various compounds that are thought to help improve your metabolism when taken regularly. If you want to speed up metabolism, supplements are something that you might consider. Various fruit extracts are used to support metabolism, as are compounds like green tea extract.

Some people are tempted to try and use stimulants like caffeine to boost metabolism. This can be counter-productive, however. While it does have some benefits, caffeine, like other stimulants, can only give you a temporary energy boost. It can’t help speed up your metabolism.
